Evolution of coils

The History of the Mattress Coil

Decades of research and development proudly deliver the world’s most advanced spring systems.

Sealy Five-Turn Double Offset Coil

FIVE TURN DOUBLE OFFSET

The basic coil design used widely in the market in 1969 was the bonnell coil, an hourglass-shaped coil with a round head and foot and (usually) five turns. The coil was knotted at the head and foot to provide stability.

In 1969, Sealy developed and introduced the “Double Offset” coil. By offsetting or flattening the sides of the coil head, two benefits were derived. Coils could be positioned more closely, giving more points of support, and a smoother hinging action between coils was made possible, providing smoother conformance to the body and resulting in more restful sleep.

1969

SIX TURN TRIPLE OFFSET

Sealy further developed the offset coil design by adding an extra turn to provide more working wire for durability while offering a more responsive, conforming coil.

The third side of the coil was offset, or flattened, to allow better edge wire attachment for greater sleep surface and the ability to add more coils to a spring unit if required.

1971

SEVEN TURN TRIPLE OFFSET

This coil took the benefits of the six turn triple offset coil and further enhanced durability and conformance through the addition of a seventh turn.

Seven turns meant an even more responsive and durable coil. Combining the triple offset head design allowed more coils for the surface area, providing better support and increased conformance to improve pressure relief.

1984

POSTURETECH®

The PostureTech® coil heralded a completely new approach to engineered support.

The core performance characteristic of this design was its ability to “Sense and Respond” better than its predecessors. The ability to provide a variable rate of response to load was part of the Posturepedic® performance criteria from the start and this advancement took it to a new level.

1994
Sealy Dual Support Spring System

DUAL SUPPORT SYSTEM

In 2001, Sealy introduced the most revolutionary coil in the industry with its Crown Jewel Posturepedic® range. This coil’s design comprised two parts.

The head and foot of the coil were designed to micro-conform to the shape of the body at rest. This was called the SynerFlex Surface and provided a transition from conformance to support unrivalled in the industry.

The inner core of the coil was based on Sealy’s famous PostureTech® coil, with its ability to sense the load applied and respond with correct support. This provided better muscle relaxation, pressure point relief and consumer value than other support systems.

2001
Sealy PosturePedic SRX Ti Coil
POSTUREPEDIC® SRX® TI
Sealy’s first truly one-sided coil, the SRx® was designed with a helix angle that gradually changes from steep at the base of the coil, to flatter closer to the surface. This provided a performance standard distinctly different from ordinary coils generally available in the market. With this coil, the use of Titanium alloy in the wire production was also introduced.
2012
Sealy Rest Ti Coil

REST™ TI COIL
This coil was a further development of the one-sided coil principle designed specifically for single-sided mattresses. Comprising three phases, it provides a seamless transition from the comfort layers to the deep down Posturepedic® support.

The three phases are:
SynFlex surface at the top of the coil
Initially flat helix angle at the inner coil
Steeper and firmer helix angle at the base of the coil.

ReST™ coils are aligned in alternating columns to increase stability.

Sealy SRx Spring Support System
SRX® SUPPORT SYSTEM GEOMETRY
Support system typically have all coils aligned in the same direction.

The SRx® support system reverses the alignment of alternating coil columns from head to toe in the spring unit.

This realignment results in a more stable unit surface and enables the coil to respond to load in a more vertical plane. This response means the coil performs more accurately to Posturepedic® design objectives.
2015

RESTSUPPORT™ TI COIL
Sealy’s most advanced coil technology – RestSUPPORT™ – uniquely provides three stages of support:
1st Stage – The unique SynerFlex surface micro-conforms to relieve pressure points.
2nd Stage – The upgraded Align Head design is softer at first and more supportive deep down to provide better contouring and Posturepedic® support.
3rd Stage – The Posturepedic® innercore is designed to sense the load applied and provide the orthopaedically correct response.

It is made with Titanium alloy for extra strength and long-lasting
performance.

2022

ALIGNSUPPORT™ TI COIL
Sealy’s unique AlignSupport™ Coil Technology is an intuitive two-stage coil system that senses your weight and responds with the support needed to help maintain your body’s natural alignment.

It leads to:
6% improvement in deep down support
75% reduction in lateral movement
18% reduction in motion transfer
