Many in Singapore have faced sleepless nights, tossing and turning in search of comfort. But if you are sharing a bed, one person’s restlessness can easily affect the other’s sleep. This is what sleep experts call partner disturbance.

“It’s natural for everyone to move during sleep. But if both partners are resting well and shifting normally, these movements should not wake either of you,” explains Daniel Green, Sealy’s Research and Development Manager.

While choosing a mattress that simply masks movement may be tempting, Sealy believes the key lies in addressing the root causes of discomfort. Ensuring both partners are well-supported and sleeping comfortably makes you far more likely to enjoy uninterrupted, rejuvenating rest.

Factors contributing to disturbed sleep

1. Tossing & Turning

If you or your partner are frequently shifting positions throughout the night, it could be a sign of restricted blood circulation. This often happens when certain parts of the body—like your hips or shoulders—bear too much pressure, especially for side sleepers. That’s why many side sleepers in Singapore opt for a softer or plush mattresses to ease pressure on these key points.

When repositioning becomes a nightly routine, it may be time to consider upgrading your mattress. The Sealy Posturepedic® range features comfort layers designed to relieve pressure and enhance comfort, helping reduce sleep disruptions for both you and your partner.

2. Back aches and pain

A mattress that doesn’t offer proper support can cause your spine to dip into an unnatural position. If your back is placed in this unnatural position for extended periods, it can cause muscular tension and back pain. As Daniel explains, maintaining the natural alignment of your spine while sleeping can do more than reduce aches and pains.

“Reducing the stress and stretch on your muscles can allow you to sleep longer with a higher quality of sleep,” he says. With this in mind, Sealy Posturepedic continues to develop mattress technology backed by orthopaedic research for optimal support.

3. Breathing Issues

In Singapore’s humid climate, asthma and allergy symptoms can be intensified by dust mites, mould, and bacteria commonly found in old or unclean mattresses. Our beds and pillows create an ideal breeding ground for these irritants, which may worsen breathing issues during the night. Sealy’s SmarTex is an innovative textile fabric treatment designed to draw away moisture to cool and regulate your sleep climate. It alleviates these symptoms by protecting your mattress from bacteria and mould.

4.   Poor mattress design

A poorly-designed mattress doesn’t just disrupt your sleep — it can impact your entire day. Without proper support and comfort, you’re more likely to experience issues like body aches, irritability, and even reduced concentration or mood changes.

“In today’s fast-paced world, we’re sleeping less so the sleep we get needs to be truly restorative,” says Daniel Green, Sealy’s Research and Development Manager. “Your sleep environment plays a major role in that, and the mattress is right at the centre. If it’s not supporting you properly, you won’t wake up feeling refreshed.”

5.  Temperature Concerns

Disturbed sleep can also be a result of feeling too hot or too cold at night. If heat is the issue, it’s important to look for a mattress that has air flow, ventilation and quick evaporation.  Sealy’s premium ranges come with Ice-Touch® Technology which is a fabric that feels cool-to-touch and provides an instant cooling effect on the skin. Here are some other handy ways you can stay cool at night and ensure a better night’s sleep.

Preventing partner disturbance

Eliminating the root causes of your discomfort doesn’t just improve your own rest — it significantly reduces your chances of disturbing your partner’s sleep as well. When both sleepers are supported and comfortable, you’re more likely to drift into deeper, more restorative sleep without tossing and turning.

While there may be medical or lifestyle factors affecting your sleep, choosing the right mattress is one of the most impactful decisions you can make. A well-chosen mattress doesn’t just help you sleep better — it supports the well-being of your partner too.
